The Lord of the Rings

The North Holland Youth Fanfare Orchestra (NHJFO), founded in 2005 by conductor Lieuwe de Jong. NHJFO consists of more than 50 enthusiastic young musicians between the ages of 12 and 25. The members of the orchestra come from the entire province of North Holland. The goal of this orchestra is to develop young musicians in the field of wind music in the broadest sense of the word.

The symphony The Lord of the Rings (1988) was written by Johan de Meij, a world-famous composer for wind orchestra and fanfare. This work was his first major composition for wind orchestra and has been awarded several prizes. In 2023 he made an arrangement of this symphony for fanfare orchestra.

The symphony is a musical impression of the story of JRR Tolkien. This story takes place in times long past. When man already existed, but was only one of the peoples on earth. In that time there were also elves, orcs, trolls, flying dragons and hobbits. There were also wizards with good or less good intentions.

The Lord of the Rings is about the almighty ring, the ruler of the thirteen rings forged by the elves. This ring gives an all-encompassing power to the one who possesses it. In order to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, it is decided that the ring must be destroyed in the volcano in which it was forged in Mordor. The journey that must be made for this by the hobbit, together with his traveling companions, is one with many adventures. Many inhabitants of Middle-earth – good and evil – become involved in this.

The symphony consists of five movements, each illustrating a character or an important event from the book.

1.Gandalf (The Wizard)

2.Lothlórien (The Elvenwood)

3.Gollum (Smeagol)

4. Journey in the Dark

a. The Mines of Moria

b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm

5. Hobbits.

In addition to the symphony, the NHJFO will perform various other musical pieces. Don’t miss this musical experience and come and listen!
