Stede Broec - Waterweide

Stede Broec

Stede Broec consists of the villages of Bovenkarspel, Grootebroek, and Lutjebroek (from east to west). Historically, these villages were adjacent to one another, but since the 1970s, Bovenkarspel and Grootebroek have been completely built together, making them effectively one residential core. The smaller Lutjebroek remains somewhat separate from this main core.

Stede Broec borders the municipalities of Enkhuizen, Drechterland, and Medemblik, and is located to the south of the Markermeer. Stede Broec is situated along the Amsterdam-Enkhuizen railway line and has two stations: Bovenkarspel-Grootebroek and Bovenkarspel Flora. The port of Stede Broec, Broekerhaven, operates as a small marina. Here lies the municipality’s most important industrial monument, De Overhaal, a ship lift that used to raise barges from the harbor to the much lower-lying polder ditches (and vice versa). In the northern part of the municipality is the recreational and nature area known as “Het Streekbos.”
