Concert ‘La Société’, Westerkerk Enkhuizen

Sunday 20 October, 15:00

FREE ADMISSION, voluntary contribution welcome!

A first!

The new organ of the Westerkerk, built in the organ case from 1549, can be heard for the first time on 20 October in combination with a large orchestra. A special first.

Organist Theo Jellema plays the organ. The 65 musicians of the United Hoorns Orkest Sinfonia under the direction of conductor Coen Stuit, provide the other part of the programme. The organ and orchestra play alternately and also together works by the French composers César Franck, Augusta Holmès and Camille Saint-Saëns. These composers worked together under the name ‘Société nationale de musique’ at the end of the 19th century to provide a counterbalance in France to the then dominant German music tradition. Hence the concert title ‘La Société’.

The music is perhaps more familiar than you might think at first glance. The rousing Danse Bacchanale from the opera Samson and Delilah will sound familiar to many.

The orchestra members are mainly from Hoorn and Enkhuizen and have worked intensively to present this special program. We are very curious to hear how this unique combination of organ and orchestra will sound!

Admission is free, come and listen, a voluntary contribution is welcome!
